Celebrate UNT history April 11 with free food, music and prizes

 University Day 2013 - Talons

April 3, 2014

It’s time to celebrate the “U” in UNT!

University Day — which began in 1961 to celebrate UNT’s transition from a college to a university — will feature live entertainment and free food.

Join us for the 53rd annual University Day:

  • When: 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Friday, April 11
  • Where: Library Mall (rain site: Coliseum)
  • Details: Bring your UNT ID carD to receive a free lunch, while supplies last. Barbecue or vegan options will be available.

The festivities will kick off with the flag parade at 11 a.m., in which organizations, departments and international students hoist the banners of their organizations or native countries.

After the parade, a short ceremony will feature remarks from Elizabeth With, vice president for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. Denton Mayor Mark Burroughs will read the document that proclaims UNT as a university.

University Day highlights include:

  • Talons and Boomer the cannon
  • Fight song
  • Alma mater
  • Recognition of the winners of the Mean Green Pride Residence Hall of the Year
  • Unveiling of amounts raised during the Student Alumni Association’s Students Giving to Students campaign
  • Performance by the band Chinatown

The event falls on Mean Green Pride Day, so be sure to play the trivia game on Instagram @UNTPRIDE to be eligible to win prizes. Participants who answer correctly are eligible to win one of three UNT Pride gift packs.

University Day coincides with the Mayor’s Day of Concern for the Hungry food drive. Show your Mean Green spirit by donating food such as peanut butter, dry beans and rice, boxed meals, cereal, and canned meats, soup and vegetables to collection boxes near the volunteer check-in tent on the west side of the Library Mall near the Coke Trailer.
