Women’s basketball team starts season with new coach

Women's basketball

The UNT women’s basketball team enters 2015-16 looking to play to its full potential as Jalie Mitchell makes her debut as head coach for the Mean Green.

Mitchell played for UNT from 1998 to 2002. She left an assistant coaching position at the University of Texas in April to return to her alma mater as the eighth head coach in the team’s history.

“It’s awesome [being back],” she said. “It feels amazing being home. To practice every day on your floor, knowing where everything is and being familiar with the campus and the people is great.”

Mitchell said the team is entering the season with the mentality of having something to prove and wanting to show what they can do. Getting to play six of its first eight games at home, Mitchell said that will help players be confident on the floor.

“I think it’ll get us used to being [at the Super Pit] and our crowd will be there and in full support for this team,” Mitchell said. “Home court advantage is great and is one of those things that gives you comfort coming into the game.”

When faculty and staff members show up to the games, Mitchell said it makes the players see that their professors support them and it makes them happy to go to their classes and be able to talk about the game.

“I’ve had professors in the past that mention ‘Hey, this player plays tonight. Let’s go out and support them.’ So it’s always nice to be supported by those on your campus.”
