Weekend features fun, future freshmen and football

Flag ParadeIt’s going to be a busy weekend.

April 11-13 is packed with activities celebrating all things UNT. Events include University Day, which marks the day the college was designated as a university; UNT Premiere, which welcomes incoming freshmen; and several sports events, including the North Texas Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony and a football scrimmage.

Here’s a look:

University Day, April 11: The annual event, which will take place from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Willis Library Mall , celebrates the day North Texas State College became North Texas State University in 1961.

The festivities will include a free barbecue lunch, Flag Parade, music and other activities. A short ceremony will feature Denton Mayor Mark Burroughs reading the document that proclaimed the campus as a university. Elizabeth With, vice president for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, also will speak. Bring your UNT ID for access for a free lunch and non-perishable food to donate to the Mayor's Day of Concern for the Hungry.

UNT Premiere, April 11-12: On these two days, accepted members of the Class of 2018 will tour campus, attend a panel about campus life, socialize with their future classmates, go tailgating and even participate in a The Amazing Race-style scavenger hunt.

2014 Alumni Awards, April 11: Former graduates -- including actor Peter Weller -- will be honored at the program program, which begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Gateway Center, Ballroom. The winners of the first-ever Sherman/Barsanti Inspiration Awards, which honors students for creativity, will be announced.

North Texas Tennis, April 12: The tennis team will play South Alabama at 11 a.m.

Hall of Fame Luncheon Induction Ceremony, April 12: The North Texas Athletics Hall of Fame will induct five new members at 11:30 a.m. at Apogee Stadium, Hub International club level.

Inductees are football players Jim Cooper, Scott Hall and Cody Spencer; soccer player Heather Hutyra; and football coach Corky Nelson. Ernie Kuehne will receive the 2013 Fred McCain Award for his contributions to the athletics program.

Green and White Game, April 12: The Mean Green football team, fresh off its victory in the Heart of Dallas Bowl in January, plays a scrimmage at 2 p.m. at Apogee Stadium.
