VP for diversity and inclusion to begin this summer

Joanne WoodardI am very pleased to announce Joanne Woodard, right, as UNT’s new Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion. My thanks to the many faculty and staff members and administrators who generously gave of their time to interview candidates for this key leadership position. Through the feedback you gave me, it was apparent Joanne was the right person for the job. I think we’ve made a great choice!

Hiring a Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion has been a top priority of UNT’s 2014-15 Action Plan because the position is a key ingredient for strategic university-wide implementation of modern diversity, inclusion, access, community engagement and employment equity operations.

In Joanne, I believe we have an experienced, energetic thought leader who will work collaboratively with academic and administrative units in employee recruitment, hiring and retention to increase the diversity of our administrative, faculty and staff ranks and to ensure we offer a welcoming, inclusive and accessible environment for all members of our campus community. Importantly, she will help guide our efforts to improve access for diverse, talented and qualified first-generation and underrepresented students to UNT, and to help ensure our campus climate is inclusive and supportive of their success. In addition, she will serve as an ambassador for UNT, helping to build alliances, partnerships and collaborations in the communities we serve.

Joanne, who has more than 25 years of experience in higher education, currently is Vice Provost for Institutional Equity and Diversity and Chief Diversity Officer at North Carolina State University. You can learn more about Joanne in the attached news release. She will officially join UNT this summer, but I will be seeking her participation and counsel on important matters between now and then.

Neal SmatreskPlease join me in giving Joanne a warm welcome from the UNT community.

UNT Proud,

Neal Smatresk
