UNT System exploring proposal for staff at-will employment status

President V. Lane RawlinsNov. 4, 2011

Dear UNT staff members,

Earlier today Chancellor Lee Jackson informed you that the UNT System is exploring the possibility of moving the system and universities in the system to at-will employment status for all staff employees who are not on an employment contract.

This decision will not be made without input from you and other non-faculty and noncontract staff, and a series of meetings has been scheduled on the UNT campus and across the system for you to provide comments about the proposed change. In addition to these meetings, you have the opportunity to express any thoughts you have about the proposal in writing.

As the Chancellor’s letter explains, this is an important matter and I encourage you to provide your comments and to participate in the discussion.

On a personal note, as a labor economist, I have studied and taught courses on the legal and operational framework for employee and labor relations in the United States over the last century.  I also have been a university president for nearly two decades and know, both academically and first-hand, the importance of a strong and dedicated workforce.

This is your place, as well as mine, so please take the opportunity to comment on the proposed change.

Thank you for everything you do each day.

Sincerely,
V. Lane Rawlins
UNT President
