UNT symposium helps retailers turn wealth of data into business success

Consumer Experience SymposiumWhat: Retail gurus will share their expertise on "Big Data and the Retailers of the Future" -- the theme for the Consumer Experience Symposium at UNT. The half-day event will feature talks about ways large-scale data analysis can be used to create meaningful and profitable customer engagements.

When/Where: 9 a.m. to noon April 7. Room 214 A and B of UNT's University Union, located at 1155 Union Circle in Denton.

Thanks to smartphone shopping, online orders and social media, retailers know more about their customers than ever before. But how can this big data be used to predict shopping trends, forecast demand, optimize pricing and turn omni-channel customer interactions into sales?

This question will be the focus for the 12th annual Consumer Experience Symposium at the University of North Texas. Themed "Big Data and the Retailer of the Future," this year's event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon April 7 (Thursday) in Room 214 A and B of UNT's University Union, located at 1155 Union Circle in Denton.

"In this era of the digital connected consumer, retailers have access to nearly unlimited data," said Richard Last, senior director of UNT's Global Digital Retailing Research Center. "The successful retailers will be those who can harness and interpret big data to create actionable insights to optimize their business."

Four panelists will discuss and debate the issue retailers everywhere are grappling with. The panelists will include:

  • John Napieralski, retail and digital consultant
  • Garrett Eastham, founder and CEO of Edgecase
  • Amrit Kirpalani, CEO of NectarOM
  • Han Woo Park, professor at YeungNam University

The half-day event will coincide with a student research competition, featuring some of the best graduate and undergraduate class projects from the 2015-16 academic year. Winners will be announced during the event, and the top honoree will be awarded a $300 prize.

The symposium is the premier event for the UNT College of Merchandising, Hospitality and Tourism and culminates a year of themed discussions on retailing.
