UNT scholars bring expertise to statewide South Asia conference

Four UNT representatives attended the Texas South Asia Conference at the University of Texas at Austin April 20-21. They chaired panels and presented papers in scholarly sessions along with scholars from other universities in Texas.

Presentations were:

  • Qaisar Abbas, manager of strategic grants, Division of Student Affairs, chaired a panel on “Media, Music and Masculinities."
  • Lisa Owen, assistant professor of Art History chaired a panel on “Caste, Class and Gender.”
  • Masood Raja, assistant professor of English presented his paper “Muhammed Iqbal: Poet, Philosopher and the danger of Appropriation.”
  • Shahrzad Rizvi, graduate student in Public Administration presented a paper on the “Use of Technology During the Mumbai 26/11 Terror Attacks.”

The conference offered scholarly sessions on a variety of topics on the South Asian literature, anthropology, media, history, religion, music, movies, gender issues, politics and natural resources.

The conference, the first of its kind, was organized by the South Asia Institute at UT Austin and Kamran Ali, associate professor of anthropology at UT.
