UNT makes great strides ahead

Dear faculty and staff,

The 2015-16 academic year is off to an amazing start, with enrollment at an all-time high of 37,231 and our biggest freshman class to date. We’ve seen significant growth across the board, including a 16.3 percent increase in graduate student enrollment, a 7.3 percent jump in undergraduate transfer students and a 6.6 percent gain in freshmen over last year. We also increased the diversity of our student body. These are all signs that more students are making us their first-choice university.

These successes are due to your hard work, and I want to thank you for pulling together during a critical year. We created a solid foundation so we can begin moving toward our goal of becoming a nationally prominent research university offering the best education in Texas. We did nearly two years of work in one year, and we couldn’t have done this without your dedication and contributions to making UNT great.

The Planning Implementation Teams also accomplished a lot this past year, completing much of the work laid out in the 2014-15 Action Plan or making a strong head start. As you’ll read in our reports, we’ve made great strides.

It’s amazing how much each team got done and what we accomplished as a community. Many of the projects required significant time, energy and contributions from a large number of people across campus. I’m grateful and proud of everyone’s hard work and the teamwork it took to make such great progress.

Neal SmatreskI hope you will join me as we celebrate this progress at the 2015 State of the University Sept. 16. We’ll review our accomplishments and look to the future. Our ultimate goal is to become a nationally prominent research university. To do that, we must strengthen our academic and research areas, which is our focus this year.

There is an incredible amount of power when people get together, make a plan and commit to getting it done. I’m so proud of the progress we’ve made and I’m excited about our opportunities. Here’s to the next 125 years!

UNT Proud,

Neal Smatresk
