University-wide commencement moved to Coliseum

Dear faculty and staff,

As much as I had hoped to host the University-wide Commencement in Apogee Stadium May 16, it doesn’t seem like Mother Nature will cooperate. Due to the severe weather forecasted for May 16, we are relocating the University-wide Commencement from Apogee Stadium to the UNT Coliseum and canceling the Jazz on the Hill pre-commencement celebration. I made the call early so that our graduates, guests, and faculty and staff attending the events can adjust their plans now. Please make note of the following details.

University-wide Commencement

  • It will be held at the same time — 8 p.m. — and follow the same general format as planned, as the venue allows.

Undergraduate College Recognition Ceremonies

  • The College of Arts and Sciences Undergraduate College Recognition ceremonies at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Saturday will include degree conferral.
  • Bachelor’s degree candidates of all other colleges will be conferred at the University-wide Commencement at the Coliseum.
  • College of Arts and Sciences graduates and their guests are invited to watch the live broadcast of the University-wide Commencement in overflow venues noted below so that they can be a part of the graduation experience.
  • The Undergraduate College Recognition Ceremonies for Friday will proceed as planned.

Doctoral and Master’s Convocation with Doctoral/M.F.A. Hooding

  • The Doctoral and Master’s Convocation at 7:30 p.m. Friday now will include degree conferral in addition to hooding. The rest of the event will proceed as planned.
  • Doctoral and master’s graduates and their guests are invited back Saturday to watch the live broadcast of the University-wide Commencement in overflow venues noted below so that they can be a part of the graduation experience.

Overflow Venues

If graduation ceremonies reach seating capacity, guests will be directed to nearby venues to watch live broadcasts of the ceremonies on television screens. Due to fire codes and safety issues, there will be no standing room for guests.

Jazz on the Hill Cancellation

The Jazz on the Hill pre-commencement festival is canceled for Saturday. The college receptions that were scheduled for Jazz on the Hill are canceled as well.

Please make sure to share this information with students who are graduating or anyone else who is working or planning to attend graduation events so they know in advance what to expect.

Thanks for your understanding and flexibility as we navigate the fickle Texas weather. While the relocation wasn’t part of our original plans, we won’t let the weather dampen our celebrations to honor the estimated 8,290 students who make up the 2014-15 graduating class and kick off our 125th anniversary celebrations.

Neal SmatreskWe know this is a once-in-a-lifetime moment for our graduates and their family and friends, and we will do everything we can to make it as special as possible. We’re looking forward to celebrating our students transformation to college graduate with our entire UNT family!

UNT Proud,

Neal Smatresk
