University Day celebrates historical milestone

University Day 2013Mark your calendars for one of the most festive days of the year.

University Day, which celebrates the day North Texas State College became North Texas State University, will take place from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 12 at the Willis Library Mall.

“It’s a great time for the community to get together and celebrate our success,” said Christa Coffey, director of Student Activities.

The annual event, which first took place in 1961, includes free food, music and other activities. UNT’s annual Flag Parade will begin at 11:00 a.m. winding through campus from Sycamore Hall through the University Union to the Willis Library mall.

The Denton Mayor Pro Tem Pete Kamp will read the document that proclaimed the campus as a university. The pep band, Scrappy, cheerleaders and dance team also will be there.

UNT community members should bring their UNT ID for access to the free food.

The free event is sponsored by the Office of the President, Dining Services, Auxiliary Services, University Union, University Program Council, Student Activities and Student Government Association.
