Union tree lighting ceremony set for Nov. 18

union gardenUNT will kick off the start of the holiday season with the 2015 University Union tree lighting ceremony. The ceremony will take place at 4 p.m. Nov. 18 in the new University Union’s rooftop garden, located on the building’s fourth floor.

Jazz students from UNT’s College of Music will perform during the event, and light refreshments will be served.

“The Union tree lighting ceremony is a wonderful place for students, faculty and staff of all different traditions to celebrate the beginning of the holiday season here at UNT,” says Nicole Newland, University Union arts coordinator. “The Union tree has been a fixture of our campus life for many years, and with this new building, that tradition will continue. We also have a brand new tree to mark the transition into our brand new space. The tree will be made entirely of energy efficient LED lights to honor our university’s commitment to ‘We Mean Green.’”

During the ceremony, students will share stories about how their families celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Eid and other winter holidays. These stories also will be shared on story boards, so Union visitors can read about different holiday traditions throughout the season.
