Tunks receives national awards for research, student support

Tunks_Jeanne_college%20of%20education.jpJeanne Tunks, associate professor of teacher education and administration, received two awards from national academic groups.

Tunks received the 2013 Claudia A. Balach Teacher Researcher Award at the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association. The award recognizes a research study titled "Reading Non-Fiction Books as an Influencing Factor in Reading Achievement." Tunks also received the same award in 2012.

She also is one of seven campus sponsors to receive the Distinguished Service Award from Alpha Chi National College Honor Society. The award, announced at the society’s annual national convention, is a peer recognition that honors influential service. Tunks has served as chapter sponsor at UNT since 2003,

Tunks teaches courses that prepare education majors for teaching elementary school math and  doctoral seminars on change management and conference preparation.

Tunks has international partnerships with the Institute for the Promotion of Science and Technology in Bangkok and with the Colegio Boston in Antigua, Guatemala. Her research is in the area of teaching and learning mathematics among under-represented populations, particularly Latino immigrant learners.
