Tobacco users have until Dec. 9 to certify usage

Employees and retirees enrolled in a state health plan who use tobacco or have a covered family member who uses tobacco must certify use through Dec. 9.

Starting Jan. 1, state law requires tobacco users enrolled in a state health plan to pay higher premiums for their health insurance coverage.

To certify tobacco use, affected employees must sign in to their accounts at www.ers.state.tx.us or call toll-free 866-399-6908.

Individuals who don’t use tobacco and who don’t cover family members using tobacco don’t have to do anything, as their premiums won’t increase. Individuals who are not enrolled in a state health plan don’t have to do anything.

Employees and retirees can get help to quit tobacco.

HealthSelect and the HMOs that participate in the State of Texas health plan offer smoking cessation programs.  Certain tobacco cessation drugs including Zyban, its generic Bupropion, and Chantix are now covered by the health plan.
