Third time no charm for Mean Green

Sun Belt Conference basketball championships, March 6, 2012, Brandan WaltonThe Mean Green men were oh, so close to a Sun Belt Conference tournament championship. But Western Kentucky stormed ahead, 74-70, in the final 4.1 seconds of the nationally televised game to advance to the NCAA playoffs.

Two players – Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year Tony Mitchell and junior Jacob Holmen - were named to the all-tournament team.

Head Coach Johnny Jones and the Mean Green finished 18-14, and reached the tournament finals for the third consecutive year.

The women and first year Head Coach Karen Aston ended their season in the tournament’s second round when Florida Atlantic scored with 1.8 seconds remaining for a 56-55 win over the Mean Green.

The Mean Green gained national attention as one of the country’s most improved teams with a 15-16 record. Aston captured the 100th victory in her head coaching career. Junior Jasmine Godbolt reached the 1,000 point career scoring mark and was named to the all-conference teams.

Now it’s back to spring sports and Apogee Stadium for Mean Green fans. Spring football practice, led by Head Coach Dan McCarney, begins March 28. The team finished 5-7 in 2011, its best record since 2006.

The 2012 Green and White Game will be at 1 p.m. April 21, and will be the first spring game in the Platinum LEED-certified stadium.
