Teaching fellow one of six in the world to receive award

Yuying Shen, teaching fellow and graduate student in sociology, has received a highly competitive international fellowship to spend four months at Freiburg University to complete her proposed research proposal, The Transmission and Reception of Western Sociological Theories in Reform Era China: An examination of Sociological Concept ‘Social Capital.

Only six such fellowships, coordinated through the International Sociological Association, go to extraordinary applicants from throughout the world. The fellowship award is $11,600.

It is worth noting that this application came about following Yuying Shen’s participation in a collaborative effort involving the Toulouse Graduate School, Office for Nationally Competitive Scholarships and the Office for Research and Economic Development - to increase the number of graduate students applying for nationally competitive (and in this case, internationally competitive) awards.

In her email announcement to us, Yuying Shen commended her research mentor Dale Yeatts, professor of sociology, and Milan Zafirovski, professor of sociology, for their assistance and support. – James Duban, director, Office for Nationally Competitive Scholarships
