System human resources leader named

SUBJECT: New Human Resources Leader Named

I am pleased to announce that Steven R. Sosland will serve as Special Assistant to the Chancellor to manage the on-going reconfiguration of Human Resources.

Steven R. SoslandSosland, left, was recently named Chief People Officer for the University of North Texas Health Science Center with responsibilities for leadership development, performance coaching and feedback, team building and values alignment.  But I’ve borrowed him to serve as a full-time loaned executive to the UNT System for the coming year. Thanks to Dr. Michael Williams of the UNT Health Science Center for sharing talent!

As our search committee reviewed candidates for the Associate Vice Chancellor for Human Resources position, I realized that Steve’s experience could be of immediate benefit to the new department and the entire UNT System. He’ll serve in this position for the 2014 fiscal year, with decisions about an Associate Vice Chancellor to be made at a later date.

Steve has most recently been serving as the Chief Operating Officer for Hill Country Memorial Hospital in Fredericksburg, where he established leadership development programs, leadership succession planning and a process to develop a performance-based culture aligned with the hospital’s stated values.  

This program included quarterly coaching plans, annual performance reviews and other guidelines that formed a best practice model for an application for the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. The hospital is a finalist for the 2013 award. Hill Country Memorial also was named one of the top 100 hospitals in the United States by Truven Health Analytics, a national firm that uses data and analytics to help hospitals improve quality, efficiency and outcomes.

Our campus, our System and our new Human Resources Department are all striving for goals similar to those of Steve’s former hospital. We want to provide our customers – more than 10,000 employees, potential employees, faculty, managers and retirees – superior service and guidance, so that they enjoy a positive and productive workplace experience.

Steve’s previous careers included talent acquisition, corporate recruiting, operations and restaurant general management, and service as an officer in the U.S. Army. He is a native of Longview, Texas.
