Students raise more than $18,000 for area non-profits

Over the past four weeks, 72 students in two Community and Public Service courses raised $18,816.07 to be donated to five North Texas non-profits.

The classes are taught by April Fehler, lecturer, and Brenda McCoy.

The receiving organizations are the North Texas Food Bank, Veterans Association, Red Cross, Asbury Relief Ministry, Denton Bible Cattle Ministry and SOS Children's Villages USA.

Students worked in teams of six to raise funds, and investigated issues of hunger in the community as part of their coursework.

One group in Fehler's class noted that those who donated the most gave students time to inform them about hunger issues and the North Texas Food Bank. This underscores how critical education is to a society, and how awareness and understanding of an issue can lead to cooperative behavior, she said.
