Staff Council kicks off new academic year

Staff Council has begun the 2010-11 school year with plans for campus events like the Homecoming parade, the WFAA Toy Drive, staff workshops and the launch of a new transportation service — the Faculty/Staff Express minibus.

The purpose of Staff Council is to support and represent the more than 2,000 staff employees.

Staff Council promotes communication within the campus community, refers staff issues to, and informs administration about, items that are of interest and relevant to staff members, and advances the university's mission by continuing to improve services for employees.

For example, when faculty and staff parking lots closed in 2009-10 as a result of construction projects related to campus growth, Staff Council listened to the staff’s parking issues. The council informed  administration of the parking issues and proposed a bus service from the Fouts Field parking lot to the middle of campus. With the support of the administration and working in cooperation with Parking and Transportation, the Faculty/Staff Express minibus service was launched the first day of classes, Aug. 26.

Staff Council also has worked with North Texas businesses to establish the Perks Program, discounts for UNT faculty and staff for such products as cell phone service, movies and restaurant meals.

Thirty-three elected council members, who work in various departments, receive input from and provide feedback to an assigned group of employees who are their constituents. The group meets monthly, usually the first Tuesday of the month. The September meeting is from 3 to 5 p.m. in the University Union, Room 418.

Staff Council is governed by officers who are elected annually. New officers for 2010-11 are:

  • George Niebling, chair; assistant director, National Institute of Transfer Students
  • Hillary Talatzko, vice chair; academic coordinator, Rehabilitation, Social Work and Addictions
  • Rachel McMullen, secretary; assistant director, Student Services, Mean Green Athletics
  • Valerie Nelson Thornton, parliamentarian; sign language interpreter, Office of Disability Accommodation
  • Jennifer Lee, webmaster; assistant director, Academic Services, College of Education

Staff Council believes that university staff members, as well as the varied university services and systems of operation, are a vital part of providing quality education offered at UNT.
