Spring semester kicks off

Terry ScholarsUNT's stellar student body is back today for the start of the spring 2011 semester.

And to start the semester off right for faculty and staff, here's a bit about this year's class to make you feel the green pride.

UNT's record-high enrollment of more than 36,000 students includes more high-achieving students — from freshmen with high SAT scores to the university's first class of Terry Scholars, which consists of 16 academically talented students tapped for their leadership potential.

The average SAT score of an entering freshman at UNT is 1,100 — higher than state and national averages— and higher than last year's average score. UNT is regularly one of the top five Texas public universities for enrolling new National Merit Scholars each fall. And the university's percentage of freshmen who graduate in the top 10 percent of their high school class is on the rise.

Just as importantly, more students are staying on track to graduate. Three quarters of UNT's 2009 freshman class returned as sophomores this year.

UNT also has experienced a surge in graduate student enrollment, which is now at an all-time high. Graduate-level growth is key to the university's push to become a major research university.

The university remains a leader in keeping higher education open and accessible to all, which is illustrated by the fact that nearly half of UNT's undergraduate students are first-generation college students.

The university's achievements include:

  • UNT ranks 1st in the state for the increased number of degrees awarded.
  • UNT ranks in the top 5 in the state for increased total enrollment among Texas universities.
  • UNT ranks in the top 50 in the nation for degrees awarded to ethnic minority students, according to Diverse: Issues in Higher Education and The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education magazines. Ethnic minority students account for almost one-third of the university's student body.
  • UNT is 1st in Texas and 4th in the nation for the enrollment of transfer students.
