Rusty, counseling program's first therapy dog

Cynthia Chandler and Rusty, UNT's first therapy dog in the animal-assisted counseling program.Rusty, a cocker spaniel who was the first therapy dog in the animal-assisted counseling program, died Dec. 13.

Rusty worked with Cynthia Chandler, professor of counseling and higher education and founder of the animal-assisted therapy program in the College of Education.

Rusty, age 131/2, worked for 10 years before retirement.

"Rusty assisted me with the training of graduate students in counseling techniques and providing volunteer counseling services to juveniles at the Denton County Juvenile Detention Center," Chandler said.

He also assisted with disaster response counseling at two Dallas shelters in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

“I am blessed to have taken such a wondrous journey with him at my side,” she said. "He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed."
