Robert Lee Hughes, Professor Emeritus of English

Robert Hughes ObitRobert “Bob” Lee Hughes, Professor Emeritus of English, died Sept. 24, in Denton.

Hughes taught at UNT from 1962 to 1992. He taught in the Honors Program and served as director of basic courses, where he mentored teaching fellows in the Department of English.

He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1953 after two interruptions for tours of duty in the U.S. Marine Corps, first in the Marine Reserves and then in combat in Korea.

He completed a master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma and a doctorate from the University of Missouri. He previously taught at Emporia State University.

Survivors include wife Elinor, three children and seven grandchildren.
