Printing and Distribution Solutions wins second top national award

Emerald Ball invitation 2011For the second consecutive year, Printing and Distribution Solutions won Best of Show at the In-Print Competition, sponsored by In-Plant Printing and Mailing Association and In-Plant Graphics magazine. The In-Print Competition is the only printing contest exclusively for in-house printers.

UNT won Best of Show in the non-offset category for the “Emerald Ball Goes Gats, by” invitation, above, produced for the Office of Advancement. Approximately 2,000 of these invitations were mailed to guests announcing the 2011 Emerald Ball, an annual fundraising event to support scholarships for the Emerald Eagle Scholars Program. Judges unanimously chose UNT’s piece for its die cuts, gatefold, exact crossovers, vibrant colors and UV coating on both sides. The materials were printed using a HP Indigo 5500 digital press.

UNT also won a gold award for the invitation and five gold awards for other projects:

  • brochure for the Division of Institutional Equity and Diversity
  • booklet about research clusters for the Office of Research and Development
  • newsletter for UNT-International
  • 2010 holiday card for the President’s Office
  • brochure for the Honors College

Jimmy Friend, director, Printing and Distribution SolutionsThe winning materials were produced by a 25-member staff led by Jimmy Friend, left, director of Printing and Distribution Solutions, who called the award "an honor" and said, "I just can’t say enough about the staff and their efforts on this project.”

In 2011, the department also earned Best of Show for the College of Business New Building Campaign and 10 awards, seven of which were gold awards. Since 2004, UNT has received 44 awards in this competition, including 33 gold awards.

Printing and Distribution Solutions has served the campus for 85 years. The department is recognized for its environmentally sustainable practices and efficient technologies:

  • first in-plant print operation in the nation to obtain In-Plant Sustainable and Green certification for its sustainability efforts, including a reduction in the carbon footprint of its press operations by more than 60 percent.
  • digital presses that use waterless inks, no chemistry, and require as much as 50 percent less paper for many jobs.
  • recognition from Trees for the Future in a citation that notes UNT's attempts to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide produced by printing equipment.
