Printing and Distribution Solutions first in nation to receive green certification

PDS green certification winnersUNT Printing and Distribution Solutions has become the first in-plant print operation in the nation to obtain In-Plant Sustainable and Green certification. The certification was awarded after an on-site inspection and audit from TNT Sustainable Business Solutions, a Colorado-based consulting and management firm. The company is administrator of the in-plant program.

“Over the last several years, we have worked closely with our suppliers, vendors, clients and employees to find sustainable resources and more efficient technology and to develop new processes that support sustainability," says Jimmy Friend, director of Printing and Distribution Solutions. “We strive to be a high-quality print and mail services provider to the UNT community, and we also pride ourselves on being a good citizen of the global community.”

The sustainable program was conceived and developed by a group of university in-plant printers in 2008 and launched for the larger in-plant market in 2010. In-plant refers to printing services within a university or other organization.

Printing and Distribution Solutions has reduced the carbon footprint of its press operations by more than 60 percent during the past year. The operation’s sustainability efforts include:

  • upgrading and replacing two presses with a newer, more energy efficient Ryobi 755
  • replacing six toner-based machines with two machines that are 35 percent more energy efficient
  • using tap water rather than chemicals in processing printing plates
  • purchasing paper with a high percentage of recycled fiber and forestry stewardship certification
  • using soy- and vegetable-based inks
  • using environmentally safe cleaning products for the press
  • eliminating machines that required large amounts of energy and excessive cleaning solvents.

UNT Printing and Distribution Solutions has served the campus for more than 85 years, and is a national leader among in-plant print and mailing operations. The department is regularly recognized in state and national competition for its work with clients, employees and suppliers. Printing and Distribution Solutions is the honorary host campus for the Association of College and University Printers annual conference April 17-21.
