President Smatresk excited to help build UNT's reputation

Neal and Debbie Smatresk

Feb. 3, 2014

Dear Colleagues,

Today I began serving you as the 16th president of the University of North Texas. I want to thank Chancellor Jackson and the UNT System Board of Regents for their confidence in selecting me for the task. I am excited about the road that lies ahead and humbled by the responsibility of leading our great university into the next phase of its evolution.

The foundation that you and President Emeritus Rawlins have created is strong. I am committed to working with you and the greater North Texas community to further build our reputation as a nationally prominent university -- a first choice institution for students, faculty and staff.

In the coming weeks and months, I will arrange meetings with all major academic and administrative units so you can get to know me and I can better understand where we are, the challenges we face, and where we hope to go. I also will meet with regional leaders to make sure they know we are dedicated partners in building a prosperous future. While there are certainly challenges ahead, I know that our strong leadership team and campus community are up to the task.

Finally, I want to thank you for the warm welcome Debbie and I received from the UNT and North Texas communities over the past month. If you see us on campus, please stop and say hello so we can get to know you (and the campus) better! The family feel of our campus community and your enthusiasm for our future are infectious, and I know we will go far together.

UNT proud,

Neal Smatresk

President, University of North Texas
