The power of travel

Kristina Blahova

When Kristina Blahová, above, went on a scuba diving trip in Egypt, she became interested in sustainable tourism. Now she leads tours in the Galápagos Islands west of Ecuador.

She credits her career to her degree from UNT's MIST program -- a joint master's degree program in international sustainable tourism that is the first of its kind in the U.S.

"I saw the immense impact of mass tourism on the marine environment and also the local culture, including damaged coral reefs, a depleted and vulnerable Red Sea ecosystem, pollution and degradation of cultural and social values," Blahová says. "UNT's MIST program opened a whole new way of thinking for me and of looking at the world and its issues."

Other alumni have made their mark in the travel and tourism industry as hotel executives, filmmakers and travel writers. The travel pros are profiled in the summer 2015 issue of The North Texan, the university’s 205,000-circulation quarterly alumni magazine.

The story also features:

  • Casey Carr, who connects people to places on their bucket lists as a general manager of his family's travel agency, Sharon Carr Travel, and award-winning film-maker for Globe Trek Productions, which caters to the cruise and tour industry.
  • Jansen Medeiros, a native of Maui and managing director of Hawaiian Hotels and Resorts, a family-owned company that focuses on providing authentic island culture.
  • Mike Pistana, who strives to create a special experience for visitors as vice president of sales of Monte Carlo Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.
  • Elaine Nunn Schoch, who writes about specialized travel experiences for Carpe Travel, a blog she founded and edits.

The summer edition of The North Texan also includes articles, photos and links to videos on other topics:
