People and animals share social responses, Chandler says in magazine

Cynthia Chandler with therapy dog RustyCynthia Chandler, professor of counseling and director of both the Center for Animal Assisted Therapy and the Biofeedback Lab, is featured in an article Counselor's best friend in the August issue of the American Counseling Association magazine, Counseling Today. Chandler, with Rusty, left.

The subheading of the article reads, "There's science behind the ability of counselor-pet teams to break down barriers with even the toughest of clients."

The article brings further national attention to the UNT Center for Animal-Assisted Therapy, as well as to the second edition of Chandler's groundbreaking text, Animal Assisted Therapy in Counseling, due out in September, and to the association's recently-formed Animal-Assisted Therapy in Mental Health Interest Network.

Chandler spearheaded the network's founding and co-facilitates it with Amy Johnson, animal assiterated therapy program project coordinator at Oakland University.

Chandler's innovation and collaboration in the counseling specialty area of animal-assisted therapy contributes to the Counseling Program's national recognition. - Robin Arthur, marketing specialist, College of Education
