Passwords now good for one year

Information Technology Shared Services (ITSS) is committed to providing UNT a secure information technology environment. The new password standards will be effective July 1. Passwords now will expire every 365 days. The change reflects best practices common in information technology regarding password composition and complexity.

New Password Guidelines:

  • Expiration: Passwords must be changed every 365 days
  • Minimum Length: Eight characters
  • Complexity: Passwords must include at least one uppercase letter, lowercase letter, and number. Special characters may be included
  • Other Requirements: Avoid using your name, birthdate or social security number.

Additionally, if you access the account management website you will notice that the overall appearance of the site has changed, you can now view the webpage from any mobile device.

To reduce the risk of anyone ever misusing your log in information, you should create a strong password and never share it with others. In addition, please do not use your UNT System password for other outside accounts like Facebook, Gmail, Yahoo, etc. If one of those services is compromised then so is your UNT System password. You are responsible for safeguarding the passwords for your computing accounts. If you suspect that your account has been compromised you can reset your password online.

The purpose of having password standards is to ensure the security of institutional information and information systems. The implementation of the standards will better safeguard the personal and confidential information of all individuals and organizations affiliated, associated or employed by UNT System and institutions. This helps to establish a standard for creation of strong passwords, the protection of those passwords and the required frequency of changing of passwords.
