One O’Clock Lab Band welcomes Dennis Mackrel

Dennis MackrelThe College of Music’s One O’Clock Lab Band welcomes noted jazz drummer and highly respected composer/arranger and conductor Dennis Mackrel, left, to the University of North Texas. Mackrel will perform with the One O’Clock Lab Band at 8 p.m. on Nov. 24 in Winspear Hall in the Murchison Performing Arts Center.

“Dennis is one of the finest drummers in jazz today. Anytime our students get to perform with a world-class musician, it is always a huge plus,” said Jay Saunders, who will direct the One O’Clock Lab Band.

The program will begin with selections from the band’s recent album Lab 2015 along with new compositions by members of the ensemble. The second half will feature original compositions and arrangements by Mackrel.

Mackrel is well known in the jazz community as a bandleader, sideman, and educator. His Broadway credits include “The First” and “A Chorus Line.” He was a member of the Count Basie Orchestra, and has performed with the American Jazz Orchestra, Buck Clayton’s Swing Band, the Dizzy Gillespie All Star Big Band, and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. His work has been recorded and performed by groups worldwide, including Germany’s WDR Big Band, the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw from Holland, the Dutch group Klüvers Big Band, and the McCoy Tyner Big Band, whose Grammy winning CDs included Mackrel’s arrangements. He has won numerous awards including Who’s Who in Music, A National Endowment for the Arts grant for composition, and Outstanding Alumni from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He is also an experienced jazz educator who conducts master classes, seminars and workshops throughout Europe, Asia, Canada and the United States.
