Oh, so close

Johnny Jones, head basketball coach(Editor's Note: The men's basketball team reached the March 6 championship game of the Sun Belt Conference tournament in Hot Springs, Ark. The Mean Green basketball teams will travel to Hot Springs, Ark., March 3-6 for the season-ending Sun Belt Conference tournament.

The women and Head Coach Karen Aston play their first game versus Troy University at 2:15 p.m. Saturday, March 3. A win sends the team to a 2:45 p.m. game Sunday, March 4, versus Florida Atlantic.

The men and Head Coach Johnny Jones, above, play Louisiana-Lafayette at 6:15 p.m. Sunday, March 4. A win sends them to a 6 p.m. game Monday, March 5 versus a winner determined by Saturday and Sunday games.

Championship games will be at 1 p.m. (women) and 6 p.m. (men) March 6. Both will be televised on ESPN networks.

The men finished the season 16-12 and 9-7 in conference play. The women finished 14-15 and 7-9.  The winner of the conference tournament earns a spot in the NCAA national tournament.

In 2011, the men reached the championship game, but lost on a last-second basket by Arkansas – Little Rock. In 2010, the men won the championship.
