O. Lee Gibson, professor emeritus of music, obituaryO. Lee Gibson, 97, died Jan. 26 in Estes Park, Colo.

Gibson was professor emeritus of music and coordinator of woodwind instruction from 1945 to 1980.  

Gibson was a renowned clarinetist, pedagogue and authority on clarinet design. He created the Vandoren V12 clarinet reed in 1988 during a visit to the company’s factory in France. The V12 remains popular with clarinetists around the world.

He was the first editor of The Clarinet, journal of the International Clarinet Society, and later served as the society’s president. His book, Clarinet Acoustics, was published by Indiana University Press in 1998.

Gibson was a member of the Acoustical Society of America and published articles and presented papers about the acoustic design of the clarinet.

Gibson was principal clarinetist for the Fort Worth Symphony and Fort Worth Opera and played with the Dallas Symphony and Rochester Civic Orchestra.

He previously was an instructor and assistant director of bands at Oklahoma State University and assistant professor of music and director of bands at the University of Idaho.

Gibson was a graduate of Oklahoma State University and received a master’s degree and performer’s diploma from the Eastman School of Music. He received his doctor of philosophy degree in musicology from UNT in 1960.

An avid amateur radio operator, Gibson also taught at the U.S. Navy Radio School in Idaho, 1943-45, and in 1945, near the end of World War II, at RCA in New York City.

Survivors include a brother, three children, seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
