New program eases book purchases for veterans

Veterans Center reception areaStudent veterans have a new resource for buying textbooks and class materials while waiting for their veterans benefits to process – the Boots-to-Books Loan Program.

The Student Money Management Center, in partnership with the Veterans Center, right, will offer student veterans a needs-based short-term loan in the form of a line of credit that can be used at the UNT Bookstore. Up to $500 will be offered during spring and fall semesters, and up to $197 will be offered during summer semester.

The program was created based upon recommendations of student veterans facing delays in the disbursement of their veterans benefits and financial aid, said Paul F. Goebel, Student Money Management Center director.

“Through this program, we will be able to help veterans in real time purchase needed textbooks and other class materials, so they don’t fall behind in their classes,” Goebel said.

“The Veterans Center and Student Money Management Center have heard from many student veterans about resources we can provide to help them transition back into classes. With the Boots-to-Books Loan Program, a student veteran processes all the loan paperwork from application to loan decision in the Student Money Management Center office, and by the time they walk to the campus bookstore, their line of credit will be established.”
