New policy requires training for supervisors of work-study employees

UNT’s policy on employing students through the College Work Study program recently changed to comply with federal regulations. Department heads and people who supervise work-study student employees must attend training to understand the new policy and its implications.

UNT Policy 05.201 now stipulates students may not work during scheduled class times, and they must work 20 hours per week or less.

The Career Center will manually review departments’ practices to ensure they are consistent with the new policy.

If a department is found in violation, the Career Center will:

  • First offense: notify the direct supervisor of the violation(s)
  • Second offense: notify the direct supervisor’s supervisor or the department head
  • Third offense: notify the dean or vice president over that department

Employees who fail to comply with the provisions of the policy are subject to disciplinary actions.

The Career Center has scheduled several workshops to train department directors who hire work-study students and the supervisors who manage student employees. Again, this is required training for those groups, both now and every two years thereafter. They should complete the training before the spring 2016 semester starts, but a few sessions are scheduled throughout the spring for anyone who cannot.

Training is scheduled at:

  • 11 a.m. Nov. 11, Chestnut Hall, room 120
  • 3 p.m. Nov. 16, Chestnut Hall, room 120
  • 10 a.m. Dec. 1, Chestnut Hall, room 120
