New federal ruling will affect overtime and compensatory time

The U.S. Department of Labor announced on May 18 a new rule regarding overtime compensation for businesses and organizations of all types, including universities.

When the new rule takes effect on Dec. 1, 2016, a number of employees who currently are in executive, administrative and professional positions will become eligible for overtime. Hopefully, this change will lead to better work-life balance for these employees, increase productivity and reduce turnover.

Luis E. Lewin, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Human Resources“We are working closely with administrators to identify best practices and options for implementing the new rule,” said Luis Lewin, right, associate vice chancellor for UNT System Human Resources. “The rule has been under consideration for almost a year, so we’ve had time to research its ramifications. Among other things, we expect the rule to help managers distribute workloads so that productivity and work-life balance are enhanced.”

Human Resources Total Rewards staff has monitored the federal rule’s discussion and progress in conjunction with legal, professional and higher education experts since it was announced in 2015. A task force comprised of representatives from each campus and the UNT System will review policies affected by the rules and determine an implementation strategy to meet the Dec. 1, 2016 deadline.

We will provide periodic updates for employees and managers and announce informational and training opportunities as we approach the date these rules take effect.

You are welcome to contact your UNT Campus HR Representative or the Total Rewards team with questions or comments.
