Nelia Mae Smith, longtime journalism advisor

Nelia Smith, journalism advisor, obituaryNelia Mae Smith, who served in the journalism department for more than 25 years, died June 4. She was 75.

Smith was the journalism department's first secretary and later served as a curriculum advisor. Students remember her as kind, calming and helpful.

She and her husband of 52 years, Don Smith, a recently retired biology professor and wildflower expert, raised three generations of children.

Nelia turned her passion for gardening into a business called Plants Alive, which allowed her to supervise interior landscaping for businesses, including Barton Creek Mall in Austin and Golden Triangle Mall in Denton.
