Navigating the freshman year

Ashley Hinck and studentsLike many freshmen, Ashley Hinck was nervous when she started college – especially because she didn’t have a major.

But UNT had just the program to help Hinck, above. Hinck enrolled in the Core Curriculum learning communities program for undecided majors, which includes a First-Year Seminar class that helps students choose their academic field. Now she’s a junior majoring in psychology with an eye on a career in counseling.

This program is one of numerous ways UNT helps students flourish by welcoming them to campus and helping them make connections with peers, faculty and staff. The initiatives are featured in the Winter 2012 issue of The North Texan, the university’s 180,000-circulation quarterly alumni publication.

Students are first welcomed with orientation, as well as Eagle Camp, Mean Green Move-In and the First Flight Week. Once on campus, students are helped by academic resources, such as the Learning Center and the Early Alert Response System, and social events, including Family Weekend and the First-Year Photo Project.

“This helps the student know that someone cares,” says Joshua Adams, the Learning Center’s director. “And it hopefully leads them to the resources and help they need.”

The winter edition of The North Texan also includes articles, photos and links to videos:

  • Learn how UNT’s partnership with the Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Mexico (UAEM) has led to joint research projects and opportunities for students to experience different languages and cultures.
  • Meet alumna Assistant U.S. Attorney Mandy Griffith, who prosecutes child sexual exploitation cases and coordinates the U.S. Department of Justice’s Project Safe Childhood Program for the U.S. Attorney’s Office-Eastern District of Texas.
  • Learn more about the UNT Alumni Association and how to join.
