On My Own Time exhibition lets employees show creative side

Sam Ivie with a prize winning entry in On My Own Time 2012.By Margarita Venegas, News Promotions

UNT employees Sam Ivie, above,  a library specialist in Archives and Rare Books, and Lindsey MacIntyre, a College of Business academic advisor, have two very different jobs. Yet, in their time away from work, they share something in common – they create art.

Both entered the On My Own Time annual, regional art competition last year and won awards.

Ivie won Best in Show, as well as the People’s Choice award and first place in the Professional division of the Works on Paper category. MacIntyre won first place in the Amateur division of the Works on Canvas category. Both said it was a surprise, and an honor.

“I had shown works in exhibitions prior to 1997, when I graduated from UNT, but I hadn’t had a recent showing of works, so it seemed like a good opportunity,” said Ivie, who has been artistic all his life and mainly paints and draws.

MacIntyre, who said she’ll definitely participate in this year’s competition, said art shows are a great place to socialize, and see and meet other artists in the community..

On My Own Time, or OMOT, features the artistic talents of people who work for companies, non-profit and governmental agencies throughout North Texas. Entry forms for the UNT exhibition are due June 28. The artworks will be exhibited at UNT on the Square from July 29 to Aug. 14.

Artists may enter their original works in Amateur or Professional divisions.

Categories include:

  • Works on canvas (oils, acrylics, other paints)
  • Works on paper (drawings, prints, watercolors, collage)
  • Black and White photography
  • Color photography
  • Enhanced photography and computer art
  • Sculpture
  • Ceramics and wood
  • Jewelry and metal
  • Mixed media
  • Textiles/fiber ar
  • Video/film/animation.

First, second and third place winners, and honorable mentions, in each of 11 categories are selected by regional arts experts who act as jurors.

In addition, the jurors select a Best of Show winner. Those who view the exhibition may vote for a People’s Choice awardee.Works that have been awarded a First Prize and Best of Show in each category are sent to the regional exhibition, where the best artwork from all of the companies involved are exhibited together at Dallas’ NorthPark Center during September.

This is the 21st year of the exhibition, which is part of a program of the Business Council for the Arts. Thanks to the support of Vice President for Finance and Administration Andrew Harris, UNT’s participation is being coordinated by a steering committee including:

  • Staff Senatel representatives - Charles Andrews, Rachel Grimes, Dilana King and Hillary Castillo
  • UNT on the Square - Meredith Buie and Herbert Holl
  • Dean of the College of Visual Arts and Design and chair of the UNT Art in Public Places Program - Robert Milnes
