The Texas Association of Music Schools was established in 1938 with the mission of advancing the cause of music in higher education both within Texas and through the promotion of cooperation between colleges and universities and the exercise of educational leadership. In 2009, the association received a large gift from the Clara Freshour Nelson Foundation in order to establish the award.

The Clara Freshour Nelson Foundation was established in 1990 by Harold Samuel Nelson in honor of his mother Clara’s commitment to education. The foundation helps outstanding college students with financial need pursue an education in the Fine Arts.
