Men’s basketball season begins with five games at Super Pit

Super Pit

With the season opener less than a month away, the UNT men’s basketball team is gearing up for a five-game home stand to start the 2015-2016 season.

Last year UNT had a six-game home stand to start its season 5-1. Head coach Tony Benford likes being able to start the season at home and thinks it is a really good schedule for them.

“We are still relatively young, so being able to play our first five games at home is huge for us,” Benford said.

During the home stand, UNT will play at:

  • 7:30 p.m. Nov. 13—Jarvis Christian College
  • 7 p.m. Nov. 16—Texas College
  • 7:30 p.m. Nov. 23—University of Idaho
  • 7:30 p.m. Nov. 24—Samford
  • 4:30 p.m. Nov. 25—Troy University

Benford said the team has received great support from the campus since he has been at UNT. He said some of the players’ professors reach out to support the team. The team has made them honorary captains for a day. Those faculty members visit with the team and join them on the sidelines.

“They’ll come to the game and spend the whole afternoon with us,” he said. “We want to do what we can to get the faculty to the students because I think you build a home court advantage having the students and faculty attend the games.”

This season UNT will face Creighton on the road after upsetting the Blue Jays in Denton 62-58 last year. That game will be nationally televised on Fox Sports 1, one of nine games to be televised this season.
