Mean Green women’s basketball coach leaving after turnaround year

Karen Aston, basketball coach, 2011-12Mean Green women's basketball head coach Karen Aston, right, has agreed to become head coach at the University of Texas at Austin.

Director of Athletics Rick Villarreal accepted Aston's resignation April 3.  A nationwide search for her replacement will begin immediately.

"I would like to thank North Texas and everyone involved in the program for giving me the tremendous opportunity to coach the Mean Green," said Aston.

"I will always be grateful to Rick Villarreal and V. Lane Rawlins for giving me the chance to coach and be around a great program with great kids. North Texas is a special place that I will always hold dear to my heart, and I wish them nothing but success and the best moving forward."

Aston won her 100th game as a head coach Feb. 18.

Villarreal said the Mean Green is “disappointed” to lose Aston. “We are appreciative of the strides she made in our program in a short amount of time. I believe it reinforces that we have established a commitment to building a strong program that will grow in size, stature and prominence.”

The Mean Green women received national attention in 2011-12, improving to 15-16 and winning a first round game in the Sun Belt Conference tournament.
