The Mean Green basketball teams will join their Sun Belt Conference colleagues in the conference tournament March 5-8 in Hot Springs, Ark.

The men’s team won the tournament in 2010 and earned a trip to the NCAA national playoffs.

This year’s team has a 19-10 record, is seeded fourth in the tournament and will play fifth seed Troy at 6:30 p.m. March 5. UNT defeated Troy 66-63 in the tournament championship game in 2010, but lost to the Trojans 81-89 on Jan. 15.

An opening round win will give the team its fifth consecutive 20-win season, and sends the team to a 6:45 p.m. March 6 game versus Florida Atlantic.

The Mean Green women struggled this year finishing with a 2-14 conference record and sixth place in the conference western division.

The women begin tournament play at noon March 5 versus Western Kentucky. A win sends them to a 12:15 p.m. March 6 game versus Denver.

Four Mean Green student-athletes, all seniors, have left their mark on team record books:

  • Tristan Thompson is the conference’s leading scorer and was named to the all conference first team.
  •  George Odufuwa is one of four players in the nation to average a double-double (10 in each of two statistical categories) in each of the last two seasons.
  •  Josh White is the Sun Belt's active career scoring leader with 1,614 points.
  •  Denetra Kellum, the women’s leading scorer, was named to the all conference third team.
