Mayborn School of Journalism to host media awards luncheon

The Frank W. and Sue Mayborn School of Journalism has been selected to host this year’s Barbara Jordan Media Awards Luncheon presented by the Texas Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities. The awards ceremony will be held from noon-1:30 p.m. March 20 at Apogee Stadium, Club Level.

Named in honor of the Houston native and U.S. congressional representative who gained recognition for her work despite her multiple sclerosis, the Barbara Jordan Media Awards are given each year to media professionals and students who have produced material for the general public that accurately and positively reports on or depicts individuals with disabilities.

Each year a panel of judges, including media professionals and people with disabilities, select winners from entries in several categories. The categories include print feature, print news, photojournalism, radio, television documentary and special contribution by an organization, among others.

“It is an honor and privilege to host this event,” said Dorothy Bland, dean of the Mayborn School of Journalism. “Hosting this event provides UNT a tremendous opportunity to showcase great journalism and expose students to excellent journalism on multiple platforms.”

This year the luncheon will feature Bob Phillips of Texas Country Reporter as the keynote speaker.
