Mariachi Camp inspires Hispanic, first generation college student

Stephanie Morena, Mariachi Aguilas, 2011Stephanie Moreno, left,  attended the UNT Summer Mariachi Camp for two years in a row as a high school student from Grand Prairie ISD. Because of camp, interacting with current UNT mariachi students, meeting others interested in the genre, and performing in the Murchison Performing Arts Center, Stephanie decided she wanted to attend UNT.

She had some challenges to overcome, but she persisted, with the help of camp founder and sponsor, Donna Emmanuel, associate professor of Music Education.

Now Moreno is the first in her family to go to college, and is a music education major with a concentration in voice in the College of Music. Her dream is to be able to teach mariachi in the public schools and show others they can achieve their dreams, too.
