Make low notes of love the high note of your Valentine’s Day

Tuba valentine

It’s said that the heart-pounding, giddy feeling of being in love makes one want to shout from mountaintops – but that’s not the case at UNT. Here, we express love in low notes of tuba serenades.

A tradition since 2005, College of Music tuba and euphonium students perform love songs, called Tuba Valentines, complete with a Valentine’s Day card and a chocolate rose, on the UNT campus, in Denton County and in the surrounding DFW area.

Tuba Valentines are definite attention-getters said Ethan Henshaw, fundraising coordinator for UNT’s chapter of International Tuba Euphonium Association.

“We’ve done several requests on the square in Denton and it always draws a crowd,” he said.

Tuba Valentines performances start Feb. 7 and last through Feb. 21 – but note that at least 48 hours’ notice is required because the unique performance is quite popular.

“We typically have a full day of Tuba Valentines on Valentine’s Day – and this year it’s on a Friday so we expect several requests,” said Jesse Orth, president of UNT’s chapter of the International Tuba Euphonium Association.

The association enlists roughly 40 student performers to play the Tuba Valentines and proceeds go to the student group to help bring guest artists and clinicians to campus. The College of Music has one of the nation's top tuba and euphonium studios.

  • Song list: Each performance is about 15 minutes long. The quartet offers a selection of romantic musical fare – “My Girl,” “My Guy,” “Hey Baby,” “I Can't Help Myself,” “Always and Forever” and “When I Fall in Love.” A new song this year, from the “Frozen” movie soundtrack, has been added.
  • Cost: A Tuba Valentine costs $30 on the UNT campus, $40 in Denton County and $40 plus mileage outside of Denton County. There is a $5 discount for students. Payments can be made with PayPal (indicate that is how you would like to pay and you’ll get an invoice via email) or by making checks payable to NT-ITEA.
