Kansai Gaidai University partnership going strong after 20 years

A delegation from Kansai Gaidai University (KGU) in Japan visited UNT Sept. 22 to discuss the universities' 20-year relationship.

Kansai Gaidai has a strong emphasis on study abroad programs and has continually sent students to the UNT Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) as well as to different departments at UNT for one semester or a full academic year.

In April 2014, IELI also opened a two-year academic English program on site at Kansai Gaidai. Five UNT staff are living in Japan and teaching in the program. This is the first such program for KGU. The first semester saw excellent results. The new semester’s courses will cover English for humanities.

Among the visitors were KGU President Yoshitaka Tanimoto; Hiroyuki Toyota, KGU professor of sociology; Tomoko Terao, executive exchange coordinator, and Miina Tanimoto, President Tanimoto's daughter.

During the one-day visit, the Japanese guests met with staff from UNT-International as well as faculty and administrators from Japanese, Asian Studies, Hospitality and Tourism Management, and Student Affairs. They discussed future program collaborations and ways to improve current programs. President Neal Smatresk also hosted them for lunch.
