John L. "Jack" Baier, professor of higher education

John L. Jack Baier, obituaryJohn L. “Jack” Baier, 68, died May 7 in Denton.

Baier was a professor of higher education in the College of Education from 1992-2011.

He previously was professor of higher education, program chair for graduate higher education and program chair for administration and educational leadership at the University of Alabama.

Baier also was vice president for student affairs at the University of Alabama, assistant vice president for student affairs at Texas Tech University, associate dean of student development at the University of Nebraska and assistant dean of student life at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

His research was published by journals and books, including College Student Services of Research and Practice, Journal of College Student Personnel and College Student Affairs Journal, American College Personnel Association and Jossey-Bass.

Bair was awarded service awards from the Texas and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, American College Personnel Association, University of Alabama and Texas Tech University.

He received a bachelor of industrial engineering degree from General Motors Institute (Kettering University), a master’s degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo and a doctoral degree from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Baier completed post-doctoral study at Harvard University’s Institute for Educational Management.   

Survivors include wife, Nancy, mother, Florence Baier Militello, son, daughter, brother, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 10 a.m. May 11 at St. Mark Catholic Church, Denton.
