It's time to celebrate UNT April 17-18

University Day 2014

UNT will be brimming with activity this weekend.

University Day will kick things off at 11 a.m. April 17 at the Library Mall. University Day celebrates Texas Legislature’s 1961 designation of North Texas as a university, leading to the name change from North Texas State College to North Texas State University.

The event begins with a free lunch (bring your UNT ID) and a flag parade, featuring international students and student organizations, that starts from Sycamore Hall, proceeds to the front of the Hurley Administration Building and winds up at the mall.

The ceremony begins at 11:30 a.m. with remarks from President Neal Smatresk and a proclamation read by Denton Mayor Chris Watts. The Talons, Student Government Association and Pep Band will also participate in the ceremony.

The band High Definition will play after the ceremony. Student organizations, departments and businesses will have tables set up for the event, which ends at 1:30 p.m.

During University Day, show your Mean Green Pride by snapping spirited pictures of you and your friends. Upload them to Twitter or Instagram, tag them with both #UniversityDay and #MeanGreenFriday, then find the Mean Green Pride table to be eligible for giveaways. The drawing will take place April 20.

Want to prepare for the big day? UNT Housing is offering complimentary balloon bouquets to departments across campus in honor of University Day.

If you are ordering bouquets for multiple offices, please include information for each location. Bouquets will be available for pick up from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. April 17 at the STUB Lounge Area. The deadline to place an order is 2 p.m. April 16. For more information, email Carmen Garza.

University Day isn’t the only event going on this weekend. Here’s what else is happening:

  • UNT Premiere: Members of the class of 2019 will explore campus April 17-18 with a series of events including panels, small group adventures and other events.
  • Greek Preview Day: Incoming freshmen and transfer students can learn about fraternities and sororities April 18.

Former radio announcer George Dunham will receive the Fred McCain Award. Tickets are $20 each or $150 for a table of eight.
  • Green and White Game: Watch the Mean Green football team play in a scrimmage at 2 p.m. April 18 at Apogee Stadium. Admission is free.
