International parenting conference rescheduled

(Editor's Note: The 19th International Conference on Parent Education and Parenting previously scheduled Feb. 10-11 has been rescheduled because of inclement weather in North Texas. The conference will be March 17-18. Registration deadline is March 4. Learn more.)
Pauline Boss parenting conf Pauline Boss, left, University of Minnesota professor emeritus, will keynote the International Conference on Parent Education and Parenting Feb. 10-11 in the University Union.

The 2011 conference will explore international perspectives on parenting and other topics in parent education. Boss is scheduled to speak at 8:30 a.m.

Boss is a fellow in the American Psychological Association and former president of the National Council on Family Relations. She is the principal theorist in the study of ambiguous loss, a term that she coined in the 1970s. Boss says that ambiguous loss is felt when a loved one is physically present but psychologically absent (dementia) or physically absent but psychologically present (estrangement).

The conference will feature presenters from the United States, and Korea, India, Spain, South Africa, Nigeria, Canada and the United Kingdom.

Participants also will have the opportunity to participate in networking lunches and breakout sessions. Session topics include moderating the influence of media and peers, raising children with disabilities, school readiness, discipline, fatherhood and immigrant families.

The conference is a joint meeting of the Center for Parent Education’s 19th Annual Conference on Parent Education and the International Sociological Association's Committee on Family Research Conference on Parenting. It is chaired by Arminta Jacobson, director of the Center for Parent Education, and Rudy Seward, professor of sociology.
