H.W. Kamp, former chair, Department of Political Science

H.W. Kamp, retired political science professor, obituaryH.W. "Wib" Kamp, 90, died Dec. 24 in Denton.

Kamp was chair of the Department of Political Science and served on the Faculty Senate. He was instrumental in the formation of the political science doctoral program, the Master of Public Administration program and was chair of the oral history committee.

He was the last surviving member of the Denton Charter Committee, which authored the Denton city charter in 1959.

Kamp also served on what is now the Public Utility Board for the city of Denton in the 1950s and 1960s.

He was a member of the American Political Science Association, Southern Political Science Association and Southwestern Political Science Association.

He was a University Honors Professor in 1974 and received the Regents Award for Distinguished Teaching and Research in 1975.

Kamp received a bachelor’s degree from Hendrix College and master’s and doctoral degrees from Columbia University. He also taught at Columbia.

Kamp served as an officer in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II. He was a cryptographer stationed in North Africa.

Survivors include wife of 68 years, Nancy, daughter, son, brother, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
