Honored music alumni offer discounts at Dallas store

Spec’s Wine, Spirits & Finer Foods is having a UNT Day on Saturday, April 14, at its first Dallas store, 9500 North Central Expressway and Walnut Hill.

UNT alumni, students, staff, faculty and the general public can receive a Spec’s employee discount by wearing UNT green. Depending on the purchase, some discounts will vary in amount. You must be age 21 or older to purchase alcohol at Spec’s.

Spec’s owners John and Lindy Rydman are alumni of the College of Music. They met when both were music education majors at the university. The Rydmans say they wanted to have a UNT Day to showcase the talent in the College of Music and to introduce UNT alumni to Spec’s.  The Dallas store is the first Spec’s in North Texas and one of 90 Spec’s in Texas.

“In making a sponsorship gift for the One O’Clock Lab Band a decade ago, the Rydmans became some of our most generous donors as well as being among our most outstanding alumni,” said James Scott, dean of the College of Music. “We have deeply appreciated all of their involvement with the College of Music and are delighted to join in a celebratory welcome of Spec’s to Dallas.”

Three performances by UNT music students are scheduled for UNT Day at Spec’s:

In addition to being honored with the 2011 Distinguished Alumni Award, the Rydmans received the Green Glory Award from UNT in 2001 and the Martha Turner Award of Distinction from the UNT Alumni Association in 2004.

They have been longtime supporters of the College of Music. In 2000, the Rydmans gave a $1 million gift to endow the One O'Clock Lab Band. They also provide scholarship opportunities for the employees of their business to attend UNT.
