Great minds, great ideas, great conversations

Great Conversations 2011 Honors College fundraisingBy Diana Dunklau, Marketing Specialist, UNT Honors College

Naughty is how celebrity chef and alumna Blythe Beck will explain how she likes to cook. Authors Florence Ridlon and Bob Wheeler will describe how they helped return Jim Thorpe’s Olympic honors.

Tenacious is how Burlyce Logan, one of UNT’s first black students, will label her life’s journey. Jazz professor Richard DeRosa, will dish about musical celebrities with whom he has worked.

Learn more about topics ranging from wine to film to football and even rocket science at Great Conversations 2012, the signature fundraising event of the UNT Honors College, a challenging program for academically talented students.

You’ll find the conversations varied - from the outrageous to the cerebral - but fun, always fun. Above, participants at 2011 Great Conversations, from left, Millard Heath, Pat Heath, George Dunham and David Broughton.

Great Conversations features 35 to 40 tables, each with a host or conversation leader. Guests may sign up to join a leader and topic of their choice, but some tables are already sold out.*

Great Conversations 2012 will be Tuesday, Feb. 28, in the Gateway Center Ballroom. Check-in begins at 6 p.m., and the event starts at 6:30 p.m. At 8:15 p.m., guests may enjoy the dessert bar and mix and mingle with all conversation leaders.

Individual tickets are $65; tables are $1,000 and presenting and event sponsorships are available. Proceeds benefit Honors College programming and scholarships.

This engaging program brings together individuals of accomplishment, knowledge and skill to facilitate conversations on important, diverse and stimulating topics. Conversation leaders act as hosts at their table, encouraging conversation among guests much as one would at a dinner in one’s own home.

Our experience is that guests are often very excited about the opportunity to visit with their conversation leader, and anticipate a wonderful evening. Dinner is served at the start of the event, and conversations follow, lasting approximately 90 minutes. The conversation leader promotes conversation in his or her area of expertise and experience. We expect many great conversations during the evening.

*These tables are already sold out:

  • Blythe Beck, alumna and celebrity chef, host of 2009's The Naughty Kitchen with Chef Blythe Beck
  • George Dunham, co-host of KTCK The Ticket’s morning show
